A yet-be-identified woman has abandoned her child in front of a Catholic church in Delta State.
The girl, believed to be around three years old, was found at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Akumazi Umuocha, in the Ika North East Local Government Area of the state.
A source told our correspondent on Wednesday that the priest in charge of the parish, Rev. Fr. Peter Nwakwu, expressed shock at the action of the child’s mother.
He said, “When the parish priest came back and saw the child in the church, he asked people around, but nobody could explain where the child came from.
“Rev. Nwakwu said he went for a meeting at Issele-Uku and was informed about the discovery when he returned. After hours and nobody came for the child, he reported to the police in Umunede. He said children are gifts from God and must be well taken care of no matter the circumstances.”
The source said a police officer took the child to Asaba, where she was handed over to an orphanage home.
The acting state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident.
He said, “The case was reported at the Umunede Police Station. The child has been taken to the women affairs ministry of Delta State for their orphanage home, while investigation is ongoing to trace her mother.”
